HOPE Research Institute conducts clinical research projects in
conjunction with the nation’s leading pharmaceutical companies.
HOPE Research Institute is located in the Northeast valley with
easy access to the freeway, public transportation, and is within 30
minutes of the airport.
When first arriving to the clinic you are welcomed into an
inviting and comfortable patient waiting room. Beyond that, you can
expect to find several large exam/consultation rooms. Research
equipment includes ECG machines, -20 and -70 degree freezers,
sample processing lab, crash cart, secure CRF storage, and more.
There is quiet space available for monitoring and a conference room
for training and initiations.
There is a secure drug room located on site in which study drug
is stored in locked cabinets. Schedule II drugs are secured in a
special restricted access cabinet. Only authorized personnel has
access to the drug room.
HOPE’s lab is stocked with basic lab supplies and has several
centrifuges, a microscope, -20 and -70 degree freezers, and
refrigerators. All blood draws are done on site for patient
convenience.
Business offices are all located on site, along with a
conference room, monitoring stations and a small but efficient
employee break-room. Monitors have access to telephone, fax,
copier, and Internet while they are visiting. Pick-ups by
Airborne-DHL , UPS and Fed-Ex are done on a daily basis.
CNS
Jeffrey S. Gitt, DO
Dr. Gitt is a gifted physician board-certified in neurology and
sleep medicine. He is the director of the sleep lab at Scottsdale
Healthcare-Shea. He has experience conducting clinical trials in
many CNS areas, such as Alzheimer’s, migraine, multiple sclerosis,
and chronic pain.
Family Medicine
James B. Vogt, MD
Dr. Vogt’s large family practice is ideal place for studies such as
hypertension, erectile dysfunction, diabetes, obesity, and the
like. Considering the broad focus of family medicine, many study
subjects can be recruited from Dr. Vogt’s primary care practice.
HOPE is fortunate to be able to work with an experienced clinical
researcher in family medicine of this caliber.
Milissa Cooper, DO
Among the outstanding Family Medicine physicians of the Steingard
Medical Group is Dr. Milissa Cooper. Dr. Cooper distinguishes
herself as a family practitioner with a special Type-II diabetes
focus. Dr. Cooper’s practice runs the gamut of generalized
healthcare issues such as hypertension, obesity, colds, flu, and
pneumonia, sports injuries, chronic and acute pain, osteoarthritis,
and diabetes mellitus II, and more. Dr. Cooper is board-certified
and NIH certified. Her busy family practice is the perfect place to
find qualified study subjects among a variety of therapeutic
indications.
Paul Steingard, DO
Scott Steingard, DO
Father and son Family Practitioners Dr. Paul Steingard, DO, and
Scott Steingard head up one of the Valley’s finest and largest
Family Medicine practices: Steingard Medical Group. Scott and Paul
Steingard, DO, have a special interest in Sports Medicine. Drs.
Steingard and Steingard are board certified in BOTH Family Medicine
and Sports Medicine, and are NIH certified for the conduct of
clinical research.
Dr. Paul Steingard serves on the Arizona Board of Osteopathic
Examiners where he served as President. He has been an active
member of the Fiesta Bowl Committee, the Valley of the Sun Chapter
of National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Board Member among
other sports affiliations. He is a founding member and past
president of the American Academy of Sports Medicine. Dr. Steingard
has won several awards from prestigious sports organizations. He
boasts having been the first team physician for the Phoenix Suns,
for whom he now serves as a Physician Emeritus.
Dr. Scott Steingard serves on the Arizona Board of Osteopathic
Examiners and has been politically involved with the Arizona State
Legislature to enhance healthcare opportunities for Arizona

Michael Castro, MD
Michael Castro, MD is an Internal Medicine physician with an
excellent reputation for quality care. He is a trained, experienced
clinical investigator. Dr. Castro’s large practice focuses on the
healthcare needs of men and women in the West Valley. Fluent in
Spanish, Dr. Castro can meet the needs of the Phoenix
metropolitan’s Hispanic and Spanish-speaking population, which is
now the majority ethic group in the Valley area. Dr. Castro is
board-certified in Internal Medicine and is NIH certified for the
conduct of clinical trials.
Derek Sebade, RN, MSN, ANP-C
Mr. Derek Sebade brings enhanced opportunities for quality care to
the large Internal Medicine practice of Michael Castro, MD, working
as a licensed Nurse Practitioner. Mr. Sebade is a very experienced

study coordinator. Mr. Sebade worked with Phoenix’s prestigious

Steven Siwek of The Pain Center of Arizona (PCA). Mayo Clinic
trained anesthesiologist Steven Siwek, MD, spearheads the research
program at PCA. HOPE Research Institute considers itself fortunate
to partner with Dr. Siwek’s prestigious group for the conduct of
unique pain-focused clinical trials. With as many as eleven pain
specialists, PCA is one of the largest professional pain centers in
Arizona. Dr. Siwek’s Mayo Clinic experience forms the foundation

clinical studies, Dr. Siwek investigates a wide variety of pain

Jon Zoltan, MD
Dr. Jon Zoltan is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and has
practiced in the Valley of the Sun since 1977. He is a leading
surgeon and partner in TOCA Orthopedics, one of the largest
orthopedic practices in the Phoenix area. Dr. Zoltan is an
experienced researcher.
Sherwood Duhon, MD
As one of the Valley’s leading board-certified orthopedic surgeons,
HOPE Research Institute is privileged to partner with Sherwood
Duhon, MD, in the conduct of orthopedic clinical trials. Dr.
Duhon’s popularity makes him one of the busiest orthopedic surgeons
in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Dr. Duhon works in general
orthopedics but has a special surgical focus on hip and knee
arthroplasty. As a successful Principal Investigator in post-op
pain studies, Dr. Duhon has been awarded “top enrollment” status on

Steve Kassman, MD

Dr. Steven Kassman heads up the research efforts of one of the
Valley’s finest orthopedic practices, Arizona Orthopaedic and
Fracture Surgeons. Specializing in orthopedic surgical studies, Dr.
Kassman carefully selects study projects with his patients’ best
interests foremost in his mind. Always interested in opportunities
that may further healthcare options for the groups’ surgical and
clinical patients, Dr. Kassman actively enrolls well-qualified
study subjects and carefully follows their study course. Dr.

Charles Creasman, MD
ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
HOPE Research Institute is indeed fortunate to work with one of the
Valley’s leading orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Charles Creasman. Dr.
Creasman’s interest in clinical research provides patients and
peers opportunities to participate in the development of promising
therapeutics and devices. As a leading surgeon at Arizona
Orthopaedic and Fracture Surgeons, Dr. Creasman’s skills as an
investigator involve him in studies of post-op pain, surgical
techniques, novel device and prosthesis implantation, as well as
studies involving the management of orthopedic surgical procedures.
As one of the busiest surgeons around, Dr. Creasman’s contributions

Podiatry
Arthur J. Tallis, DPM
HOPE’s Podiatry team, are board-certified foot and ankle surgeons.
They do a great deal of study work related to wound care,
neuropathic pain, diabetic ulcers, and bunionectomies. Both have
special interests in surgical and device studies. Dr. Tallis works
extensively with the Veterans Hospital and volunteers for the
education and well-being of local Native American populations.
V. Tracy Marshall, DPM
Tracy Marshall, DPM, partners with HOPE Research Institute and Dr.
Tallis in the conduct of podiatric clinical trials. Dr.
Marshall's experience features resident training at one of the
nation's largest Veterans' Administration hospitals along
with a special focus on caring for diabetic complications of the
foot and ankle. Dr. Marshall's contributions include awards and
recognition for his contributions to the Diabetes Teaching Team.
Dr. Marshall is a registered podiatrist and board-eligible foot and
ankle surgeon. He is a NIH trained, experienced Principal
Investigator with a reputation for excellence and meeting
enrollment goals.

Howard P. Tay, MD, FACS
Dr. Tay is the Medical Director of Canyon State Urology, a
prestigious urology practice that sees over 50,000 patients
annually. Dr. Roscoe S. Nelson spearheads the group's research
program. Drs Tay, Nelson and Christopher S. Stewart serve as PIs
for a wide variety of men's health clinical research
studies.
Roscoe S. Nelson, MD
Chief among HOPE's experienced clinical investigators is Roscoe
(Rocky) Nelson, MD. Dr. Nelson spearheads the research effort at
Canyon State Urology. Practicing physician and surgeon, Dr. Nelson
is board certified in urology, is a highly-awarded physician and
surgeon, a busy and active family man, and is among the
Valley's leading urologists. Canyon State Urology is one of the
largest urology practices in the Phoenix metropolitan area. As an
indication of his exemplary work, devotion, and popularity, Dr.
Nelson has been honored with the Patient's Choice Award at
Thunderbird Samaritan and was selected as one of Phoenix's top
doctors.
Christopher Stewart, MD
Mayo Clinic trained urologist, Christopher Stewart, practices
medicine as one of Canyon State Urology's leading physicians
and surgeons. Dr. Stewart partners with HOPE Research Institute in
the conduct of dynamic clinical trials. Dr. Stewart's very busy
private practice is one of the largest in the Valley, and Dr.
Stewart is among the leading surgeons at Thunderbird Banner

Women’s Health
Allan T. Sawyer, MD
HOPE Research Institute is privileged to partner with Allan T.
Sawyer, MD, a certified and experienced clinical investigator, and
board certified physician and surgeon. Dr. Sawyer has been in the
private practice of obstetrics and gynecology in Glendale, Arizona
since 1992. In addition to his devotion to quality care of patients
in Arizona, he also actively works to improve the quality of care
of patients nationally. Serving on the editorial committees with
the American College of Obstetrician's and Gynecologist's (
www.ACOG.org ) writing ACOG's
Guidelines for Perinatal Care (5 th edition, released November
2002) and Planning Your Pregnancy and Birth . He presently serves
as Chairman on ACOG's Practice Management Committee, and has
previously served on the Committee on Obstetric Practice and
Committee on Practice Management. He has previously been awarded
Phoenix Magazine's TOP DOC award. Dr. Sawyer is currently the
chairman of the Bioethics Committee at Thunderbird Samaritan
Medical Center.
The staff of Hope Research Institute - which includes certified
clinical research coordinators, skilled nursing staff, a
recruitment coordinator, and a regulatory specialist - all work
together in all aspects of study implementation. The research staff
consists of multiple teams, each managed by experienced clinical
research coordinators. Under the guidance of the principal
investigator, study coordinator teams efficiently handle clinical
trials. HOPE’s regulatory specialist assists coordinators in the
challenging task of regulatory compliance.
Prior to a study’s initiation, strategy meetings are held that
include the director, principal investigator, clinical manager,
coordinator, recruitment coordinator, and regulatory specialist.
This collaboration allows staff members to excel in meeting each
study’s challenges and guidelines. This teamwork approach has been
