Trial Information
Summary: Acute Influenza- Adults
People with acute influenza are asked to participate in a
research study being conducted by Alpha Medical Research.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if
you:
- Are at least 18 years of age
- Positive Influenza A or B Rapid Antigen test (RAT)
- Presence of at least one respiratory symptom (cough, sore
throat, or nasal symptoms) of any severity
- Presence of at least one of the following symptoms – myalgia
(muscle aches), headache, feverishness or fatigue of any
severity
You may not participate in this study if
you:
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or intend to become pregnant
during the study
- Have significant signs of acute respiratory distress (ARDS- the
lungs stop functioning normally and mechanical ventilation is
needed) with a sudden onset due to the rapid accumulation of fluid
or toxins in the lungs and body.
- History of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD-
lung disease in which the lungs are damaged, making it hard to
breathe.) or severe persistent asthma
- History of chronic renal impairment (the inability of the
kidney to do its job) requiring hemodialysis (the use of a machine
to clean wastes from the blood after the kidneys have failed)
- Clinical evidence of active bacterial infection at any body
site requiring therapy with oral or systemic (affecting the entire
body) antibiotics
- Currently being treated for active viral hepatitis C
- Currently being treated with oral warfarin or other
anticoagulants (blood thinners)
- Immunized against influenza with live attenuated virus vaccine
(FluMist®) in previous 21 days
- Have participated in another research study within the last 30
days
