Trial Information
Summary: The Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of WNY under the direction of Dr. Paresh Dandona is currently conducting a study involving post-menopausal women with osteopenia.
The purpose of this study is to find out if the medication
Celecoxib works in limiting further bone loss in postmenopausal
women who are showing signs of bone loss (osteopenia).
Osteopenia is a condition where some bone loss has occurred, and
if untreated, could continue and eventually result in osteoporosis
and bone fractures.
This study is a 14-week study assessing bone resorption activity
of the FDA approved medication Celecoxib (Celebrex) 400mg. This
research project will consist of 5 visits to our clinic in which
you will randomly be selected to receive one of the following:
Celecoxib alone, Estrace (estrogen therapy) alone, Estrace in
combination with Celecoxib or a placebo (pills with no medication).
You will also receive Calcium 500mg plus vitamin D 200 IU as a
supplement throughout the project. At each of these visits we will
monitor your vital signs, perform laboratory tests including blood
and urine sample collection and physical exams. In addition there
will be 2 bone density assessments by a DEXA screen and a quality
of life questionnaire to be filled out.
All study medications, laboratory tests, physical exams, and
parking will be of no cost to you. You will also be reimbursed for
your time and travel.
To qualify, you must be a post-menopausal woman age 60 or older
and are not taking Celebrex, anti-inflammatory agents or pain
medication for arthritic discomfort. If you feel you may qualify
for this research study and are interested in participating, please
feel free to contact one of our knowledgeable research associates
at 716-887-4486 or 716-887-5107 for more information.
