Center Overview

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is part of McGill University and is located in the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. The CRU specializes in conducting clinical trials for neurological diseases and has been doing so since 1986. Through McGill and the hospital, the CRU has access to the most advanced medical technologies available today. The CRU is dedicated to:

  • Aiding the advancement of neuroscience through clinical research.
  • Participating in clinical trials to identify new or more effective treatments.
  • Supplying study subjects with the best quality of care.
  • Providing high quality data to sponsors and investigators.

Clinical Research Experience

The MNI CRU has extensive experience in Phase I, II, III & IV trials for neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's, stroke, neuromuscular diseases, brain tumor, neuropathic pain and migraines. The Clinical Research Unit was a major participant in the trials that led to the first approved medications for Multiple Sclerosis.

Our center has worked with many industry sponsors including:
Allergan, Astra Zeneca, Aventis, Bayhill, Berlex, Biogen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Genentech, Neopharm, Novartis, NovoNordisk, Protein Design Labs, Pfizer, Sanofi and Teva Neurosciences.

We have also participated in studies funded by granting agencies such as the NIH and the MS Society of Canada.

Facility Description

The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI/H) is located in the heart of Montreal close to numerous hotels and restaurants and accessible by major highways and public transportation. We are only 30 minutes from the international airport. The MNI/H building comprises both a university teaching / research institute and a hospital. This is the ideal location for the Clinical Research Unit since it can offer participation in clinical trials to the thousands of inpatients and outpatients that pass through our doors every year. Our clinical research facility has treatment rooms with reclining armchairs for our patients who can watch DVDs during their treatments. We have workspaces with phone and internet connections for sponsor study monitors. We also have access to the medical facilities and emergency room of the Royal Victoria Hospital, which is adjacent to us and connected by a covered walkway.
