
Center Overview
The Vasek Polak Research Program is the clinical research office of Torrance Memorial Medical Center, a
376-bed, non-profit community hospital. The Program was established in 2003 to honor the benevolent
wishes of its namesake, successful South Bay businessman and philanthropist Vasek Polak.
The
Vasek Polak Research Program serves the public interest by:
- Developing and conducting meaningful clinical and health care services research aimed at improving
the health and/or quality of life of members of the community
- Providing administrative and technical support to investigators as they identify and develop
research proposals
- Assisting researchers to find the clinical resources and funding necessary for proposed studies
- Educating the community regarding the research findings, and whenever possible working with the
community to implement changes based on new information

Clinical Research Experience
The Vasek Polak Research Program is supporting the following research: Imaging involving PET/CT and
MRI in diagnosis and treatment. In-patient infectious disease studies. Oncology: Including breast,
ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and endometrial cancers; ductal carcinoma in situ; head and neck
carcinomas; small cell lung cancer; encompasses treatment trials, conditions across the disease
continuum: cancer risk reduction, post-breast surgery, lymphedema and cancer survivorship.
Cardiology: early detection and prevention to innovative therapy and management; cardiac and vascular
disorders; hypertension, and diabetes.
We participate in research with various pharmaceutical or device companies, as well as NIH-sponsored
studies.

Facility Description
Our facility supports in-patient and out-patient research using our state-of-the-art medical center.

Investigator Experience
Our site provides experienced Principal Investigators in the areas of imaging; infectious disease studies; oncology; cardiology; and diabetes.

Staff Expertise
Program staff include three full-time study coordinators with 10 years', 8 years', and 3 years' experience respectively.

Patient Demographics
The Vasek Polak Research Program relies upon Torrance Memorial Medical Center's patient population. Located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, with a population of over 9.3 million, the Program attracts a diverse population, encompassing a variety of ethnicities.

Other Information
Torrance Memorial Medical Center has an IRB which meets once a month.
