Center Overview
The Tucson Orthopaedic Research Foundation was created in 1995 so that the physicians could participate in clinical research, develop projects and assess outcomes. Research has been undertaken in clinical studies related to orthopaedics including pain management, blood problems, soft tissue injuries, and postoperative care. In 2001 the Foundation’s mission was expanded and renamed the Tucson Orthopaedic Research Center.
The new Tucson Orthopaedic Research Center (TORC) is a multi-specialty investigative research facility dedicated to conducting clinical research trials efficiently and at the highest level of quality.
Tucson Orthopaedic Research Center is a division of the Tucson Orthopaedic Institute (TOI), which includes 28 practicing orthopaedic surgeons. Tucson Orthopaedic Institute operates three Tucson clinics: Tucson Orthopaedic Institute @ Tucson Medical Center (TOI/TMC), Tucson Orthopaedic Institute @ Northwest Medical Center (TOI/NW) and Tucson Orthopaedic Institute @ OroValley (TOI/OV). TOI participates with the Tucson Medical Center in the operation of 2 bay day surgery clinic located in the within the Institute’s building. A new TOI Spine Center is now open.
Orthopaedic Clinical trials are completed in five locations: Tucson Medical Center, El Dorado Hospital, Northwest Hospital, and at the three Tucson Orthopaedic Institute clinics. The center also cooperates with research services of investigators who are board certified in Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Urology, Pulmonary, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Neurology, Gynecology, Gastroenterology, Plastic surgery, Dermatology, among others.
The newest addition to the Research area is the Surgical Training Center, which hosts many training sessions for doctors from all over the United States to learn and perfect their techniques.

The Research Headquarters (TORC) is located on the second floor. Within our facility there is a patient room, conference room, work area for CRA’s and monitors, secure record and medication storage, a freezer (-20° F), a dedicated refrigerator, fax, copier, numerous telephone lines, Internet access, a state-of-the-art computer system, centrifuge, and phlebotomy.
The TOI Northwest facility is housed in 10,500 sq.ft., with four orthopaedic surgeons on staff, nine exam rooms, four cast rooms, and a conference room. The TOI Oro Valley has five orthopaedic surgeons on staff to assist patients with their needs.
In addition to three locations around Tucson, Tucson Orthopaedic Insitute is home to a training venue for surgeons from all over the U.S. to attend. This surgery training facility encompasses 5600 square feet, including a conference area (to hold 40), bio-skills laboratory, and is equipped for multimedia and teleconferencing use. Patient Demographics
Metropolitan Tucson is home to more than 750,000 permanent residents. During the winter months, the estimated population increases to more than 1,000,000 because of the deep, southwest pocket location and superb climate. TORC is conveniently located inside TOI, adjacent to TMC, and is a less than a half hour’s drive from Tucson International airport. Tucson is a highly diverse community with an extensive population of seniors, college students, and minority groups. Our comprehensive in-house patient database is continually expanding with more than 30,000 active charts.
