Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the optic nerves and spinal cord. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of optic neuritis and myelitis. Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSD) refers to a group of conditions that share similar clinical features with NMO but do not meet the strict diagnostic criteria for NMO.
