Study Summary

This research study aims to determine the clinical efficacy of a novel sound based therapy in

persons with Mild Cognitive Impairment and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). These participants are experiencing difficulties in cognitive

abilities, including memory and language function. We hope to understand how this sound

intervention could improve memory and language function through this study.

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion

Inclusion Criteria:

    • This study focuses specifically on people experiencing a cognitive decline from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or language deficits resulting from Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). To be included in the study, participants with MCI and AD must have a history of progressive memory impairment, and PPA must have a history of a progressive language deficit.

Exclusion

Exclusion Criteria:

    • Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer's Disease and Primary Progressive Aphasia participants must not suffer from any other type of neurological disease. Participants must not be pregnant. Furthermore, participants must not have hair braids or other hair products that cannot be removed. These hair products will interfere with the EEG signal during the recording.

Study Description

This research study aims to determine the clinical efficacy of a novel sound based therapy in

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). These participants are experiencing difficulties in cognitive

abilities, including memory and language function. We hope to understand how this sound

intervention could improve memory and language function through this study. If you volunteer to

participate in this study, we may ask you to do any, if not all, of the following two activities at the

Callier Clinical Research Center in Richardson: behavioral assessments to determine ones

memory and language functioning and EEG testing. EEG is a popular form of brain imaging

used by universities, hospitals, and industries. By placing sensitive electrodes on your scalp,

researchers can detect subtle changes in electrical activity as the neurons of the participant's

brain activate. All behavioral experiments will take place during the 1st visit and will not exceed

more than 2 hours. All EEG recordings will take place during the 2nd visit that will not exceed

more than 2 hours.
